Using the Blank Templates

On the blank template page, find the folder with the Blank Design Templates for the book style and size you want to order. Be sure to choose from the folder with the RGB color space that matches your images.

Download this folder to your desktop, or anywhere you can easily locate it on your hard drive. You may also want to rename it with your client's name.

Each blank template folder contains files as shown below.
  • 0000.psd ... Cover Page. Includes a placeholder layer that needs to be deleted.
  • 0001.jpg ... starting right page
  • 0203.jpg ... pgs. 2 and 3 spread
  • 0405.jpg ... pgs. 4 and 5 spread

    etc...

  • 8000.psd ... Last left page. Includes a placeholder layer that needs to be deleted.

* Note - Please be careful to choose the matching folder for the book size, number of pages, cover type, binding, and color profile of your images. Each one is slightly different and choosing the wrong one will give you unexpected results.

The spread pages actually represent 2 facing pages at a time - left and right. This makes it very easy to visualize and layout complimentary page designs or create panoramic images that span both pages.

The guide lines down the center of the spread page is the fold, or gutter area.

Approximately 1/2 inch of the image area will be hidden in the gutter.

Please be careful not to put important parts of the image within the gutter area.

It usually looks fine to have parts of an image go through the gutter, as long as it's not important information - like someone's face!

The guide lines around the edge of the page represent the area that will be trimmed completely off in production.

Be aware of your Guide Lines. As you can see in the figures to the left, if you put a head over the trim line, the top of it is cut off in production.

Ouch! If you want images that run off the page, also called a bleed, then place your image all the way to the edge of the page. However, make sure important details are still within the trim lines.

About the Barcode Area

On the last page and the back cover, there is space reserved for the required barcode. These files are the only pages in your template folders in .PSD format.

When opened, the page file will have a layer with the barcode placeholder. Please be careful not to put important parts of the image in the Barcode area.

You may place part of your image under the barcode, but keep in mind it will be partially hidden.

When you are done designing the page, please remember to delete the barcode layer before saving the file in its final JPEG format. Our system will automatically overprint the barcode in the reserved area.

Saving the Pages

When the layout is done, use File > Save As and create a master copy of your pages in .PSD format, with all your layers intact.

Check the "As a Copy" option in your save dialog box. Put this master file in a separate folder from the original files you started with. (see figure x)

This Master Copy is helpful if you ever need to modify and re-submit your page design.

Finally, flatten the current page layout and save it over the original file you opened (not the PSD) - keeping it in the original client folder you named. Save this file as a .JPG, quality 12.
